British Mountaineering
British mountaineers have always been at the forefront of world mountaineering. Spending their formative years in the mountains of Britain gives them the experience and skills required to tackle any mountain in the world.
Despite their relatively modest altitude, British mountains call for an adventurous nature and demand great respect with their rapidly changing conditions. With a strong ethic for keeping the mountains free of infrastructure, the British style of climbing is strongly defended and world renowned.
Climbing in the British mountains was originally seen as training for the bigger ranges. Climbers from around the world now travel to the UK to experience the unique mountaineering on offer here, from gentle ridge scrambles to multi-day winter epics. The mountains of Snowdonia in Wales and The Lake District in England offer endless potential for climbing and are steeped in history. But it is in Scotland that the biggest challenges are found with the most famous expedition being the Cuillin Ridge on Skye. With over 3000m of ascent spread along 10km of continuously narrow and exposed ridge rising straight out of the sea, a full traverse should be high on the tick list of all climbers and mountaineers.
British Mountain Guides are perfectly placed to guide you round our unique mountains. With the experience gained from a lifetime spent climbing in the British hills we will lead you through the skills required to move quickly and confidently over all types of ground. With a Guide you can experience more exposed and challenging routes, and discover the most magical places in the British hills, both in summer and winter.
