The training scheme can be thought of in three phases:
- The Induction phase which verifies the registrants ability to join the training scheme.
- The UK components of the training scheme.
- The alpine components of the training scheme.
Some of the components of the UK and Alpine run concurrently.

The total number of training and assessment days is 107 and will normally take 3 years to complete.
Registration
Registration takes place when the Association accepts the candidate's application. At this point the candidate becomes known as a BMG Registrant.
