British Guides attend Avalanche Conference in Edinburgh

The BMG team at the SAFOS event

British Mountain Guides have hosted, and attended, the recent Snow and Avalanche Foundation of Scotland conference in Edinburgh

This year's SAFOS (Snow and Avalanche Foundation of Scotland) conference was hosted by the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena at Ratho. With an emphasis on "Decision Making in Avalanche Terrain", British Mountain Guides were working hard behind the scenes, as well as attending the workshops.

The conference included lectures from some of the world's top avalanche experts from the Swiss Avalanche Institute in Davos, as well as experts in decision making and sports science. The event was attended by nearly 140 people, but the contributions made by the BMG members present was highly significant. Most of those attending were outdoor professionals, Mountain Rescue, or researchers. Those present from BMG were Mark Diggins (SAIS and eventcoordinator), Alan Kimber, Stuart Macdonald, Smiler Cuthbertson, Ian Sherrington, George Reid, Alan Hinkes and Sandy Allan.

Stuart Macdonald commented "Avalanche is a constant threat whether in Scotland or the Alps, and as professional Mountain Guides we never stop learning. Sharing information at conferences like this can only help improve the safety of our clients".
