New Guides for Scotland
Scotland in two volumes
Perfect weather, long days, and not a midge in sight (yet) - it's the season for Scottish Rock
Early summer in Scotland. The days are long, the weather is often settled, and the dreaded midge has not yet emerged. Every year, many British Guides will be working or playing 'North of the border' and this season the conditions have been superb.
The tremendous weather this spring coincides nicely with the launch of a new series of rock climbing guides to Scotland. Scottish Rock covers the whole country in two volumes, and is the product of a genuine labour of love, spanning two decades, by author Gary Latter. Scottish Rock guidebooks cover all of the classics, and many previously un-recorded crags and routes.
From the Foreword by Hamish MacInnes:
"If you have an ambition to do all the climbs in these two Scottish Rock guides I think you'd better schedule time off in your next life. This labour of Gary's has been of gargantuan proportions. Those of you who use the guides will benefit by his dedication and the sheer choice offered; if you divide the retail price of these by the number of good routes you'll realise this is a bargain."
A recent review suggested:
"Of course, your favourites are all there: Famous sea stacks; Diabaig Pillar; The sun kissed crags of Reiff; Isle of Skye classics from Kilt rock to Coruisk. This time, however, the photos are better than you've ever seen, the maps are fantastic, the history absorbing, and the routes are all first class. And this is where this guide book makes its mark. In one double page spread you move from the ultra classic Dubhs ridge **** to the ultra modern Skye wall ****. Moderate to E8 without so much as a turn of the page – yet both are equally inspiring."
With volume one covering the country South of 'the Great Glen' and volume two covering the North, there is something for everyone. You can read full reviews by following those links or visiting UKClimbing or PesdaPress directly.
