18 talented and experienced climbers gathered at the BMG Open day to find out more about becoming a Guide
The recent British Mountain Guides Open Day was a great success! 18 talented and experienced climbers gathered at Plas Y Brenin in Snowdonia to find out more about becoming a Guide in the future. The day was supported by Mountain Equipment and hosted by Terry Ralphs and Andy Teasdale who gave the team a detailed presentation of the requirements, and the rigorous process of training and assessment courses involved in gaining an international license (IFMGA carnet) to work as a Guide.
Due to the extent of Alpine climbing experience required, most BMG members and applicants would be eligible to join the Alpine Club. Simon Yates therefore delivered an informative presentation on the benefits of joining this well established and prestigious group of climbers. Many British Mountain Guides are already Alpine Club members.
After an informal lunch at Plas y Brenin, more Guides joined the team and headed for the Llanberis pass to enjoy the pristine weather and dry rock. Climbing in small teams gave the attendees a chance to climb with a Guide, and ask any questions they may have had about becoming a Guide in the future. The afternoon culminated in a get together at the RAC boulders, before some dinner - and a lecture on the diverse and varied work of a Guide.
All in all, the day was a great success for all involved. Thanks go to Mountain Equipment for their continuing support for this event, and we wish the attendees all the best with their future careers.
