James Thacker on Lakeland rock
James Thacker reports on this year's summer training in the Lakes
This year, just one candidate met the high standards to commence the British Mountain Guides Training and Assessment scheme. This gave the, already high quality, course a certain 'bespoke' feel, as James Thacker reports:
"I joined Adrain Nelhams on Monday 11th May for three days of intensive training. This first day involved a visit to Raven Crag in Langdale climbing numerous routes to explore the key concepts of UK rock guiding, culminating in a brisk walk up the hillside to Gimmer. An ascend of the classic 'Kipling Groove' followed, combined with short-roping on the approach and descent.
The second day was characterised by intensive practice of dynamic short roping in ascent and descent at Dow Crag near Coniston. We were generously joined by Ian allowing us to practice this technique with both one and two clients before retreating to a more sheltered crag in very high winds.
Finally, Adrain joined us both on Wednesday to make for an interesting and informative teaching day. We visited Black Crag climbing Troutdale Pinnacle before moving to Shepherd's Crag climbing a handful of other routes, combined with ground level teaching and some abseiling.
Thanks to Ian and Adrian who gave up some days off to make for more effective ratios."
James will go on to join other candidates as he works his way to becoming a Guide over the next few seasons. Follow this link to find out how to become a Guide.
