Update 2 – Incident Nanda Devi East

Posted: 08.07.19 by James Thacker

The British Mountain Guides (BMG) are aware of media reports that the seven bodies recovered from Peak 6447m, near Nanda Devi East, have been identified. Whilst no official announcement has been made there is no reason to doubt the veracity of this information.

We are sad to share the news that the eighth and still missing body is that of our member Martin Moran. The thoughts of all British Mountain Guides go out to the eight families and friends involved in this tragic incident.

The task of recovery undertaken by the Indian Mountaineering Federation (IAF), the Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and the Indian Air Force (IAF) has been a protracted and complicated recovery operation at high altitude; a monumental effort under extremely difficult circumstances, and we are all grateful for their supreme efforts.

We understand that in the coming days the bodies will be repatriated to their respective countries and families. This terrible tragedy has touched so many people in the mountaineering community around the world but for the families of the mountaineers who lost their lives, their loss is immeasurable.

Our memories of Martin will linger long and we will always remember him as the consummate professional, a companion with whom great mountain days were shared and a true friend and colleague. May he rest in peace among the high places that he loved so much.

Our tribute to Martin Moran can be seen here at – Our friend and colleague, Martin Moran.
