Either side of the BMG’s recent Annual General Meeting, there have been a number of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses delivered for the associations members. One of these was a new addition – ‘Mountain Medicine’.
The challenges that Guides face in first aid or medical scenarios are as diverse as the types of work that they undertake. Although, all Guides hold a current First Aid Certificate some extra training was arranged in a variety of areas from the effects of altitude, to ski related injuries.
Those present enjoyed a full two days of training under the lead of Dr Rachel Anderson, an experienced Emergency Department and previous Everest ER doctor. She was joined by Dr Martin Rhodes (Medical Advisor to Antarctic Logistic Expeditions) and Dr Monica Piris. All of whom hold the UK Diploma in Mountain Medicine (DiMM).
The BMG would also like to thank Dr Carron Scrimgeour an ‘Urgence’ specialist from Chamonix and Sallanches Hospitals, who gave a guest lecture on the role of the Doctor (and Guide) in the challenging field of avalanche resuscitation.
Thanks also to Carla from the Aiguille du Midi Hotel in Les Bossons…
