As British Mountain Guides, the mountains are not just our workplace; they are our home, our passion, and our lifeblood. Because of this, we are on the frontline of environmental change. We see the stark reality of climate change on a daily basis, from receding glaciers and shifting freeze-thaw cycles in the Alps to increasingly erratic weather patterns right here across the UK peaks.
While many of us already do what we can on an individual level to reduce our footprint, the scale of the crisis requires a much bigger response. That is why the BMG Climate Action Plan demands that we do more, pushing us to look beyond our personal habits and drive collective action.
With this commitment in mind, we are incredibly proud to announce the BMG’s partnership with the World Climate Relay.
A Focus for Optimism and Unity
Partnering with the World Climate Relay has provided a brilliant focus for our members to come together and share a positive message of optimism. In the face of daunting climate statistics, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. However, this relay reminds us of what we can achieve when we stand shoulder to shoulder. Collectively, our impact is far greater than what we can do individually.
For the BMG, this partnership has been a fantastic way to share knowledge, spark vital conversations about sustainability in mountaineering, and raise funds in a genuinely fun, engaging way. By supporting the World Climate Relay, we are helping to channel resources directly into the best-performing climate charities globally, ensuring our efforts have the greatest possible impact.
Leading the Charge: The BMG Team
A massive congratulations and thank you must go to our brilliant BMG team members who have stepped up to spearhead our involvement and carry the torch for climate action:
Jon Bracey, Lou Reynolds, Tim Jepsom, Caspar McKeever, Joe Brindley, Jon Morgan, Mike Pescod
These guides embody the spirit of the BMG by leading by example, navigating challenging terrain, and showing that when the mountain community unites, we can move mountains. The team raised £3880 and the whole event raised $136,291 over the week of 5th to 8th June 2026. People from 61 countries and all 7 continents took part!
Not all climate charities are created equal
Despite good intentions, not all climate nonprofits are created equal.
That’s why the World Climate Relay partnered with the world’s leading climate charity evaluator, Giving Green. Their researchers spend thousands of hours looking for climate projects with the most potential impact. 100% of donations go to their top recommended charities, ensuring the money you raise goes as far as possible.
What Comes Next?
The Climate Action Plan is an ongoing journey for the BMG. We want to thank everyone who has supported the World Climate Relay so far, whether by donating, sharing the message, or cheering our team on.
Let’s keep this momentum going; the World Climate Relay is now an ongoing cause! By working together, we can protect the fragile mountain environments we love for generations of climbers, walkers, and skiers to come.
