Position Statement: Use of the title ‘Mountain Guide’

Position Statement from the British Association of Mountain Guides (BMG) – Use of the title ‘Mountain Guide’

The British Association of Mountain Guides (BMG) supports Mountain Training United Kingdom and Ireland’s (MTUKI) position that the name ‘Mountain Guide’ is the preserve of BMG/IFMGA-qualified individuals, just as ‘International Mountain Leader’, ‘Mountain Leader’ and ‘Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor’ belong to those who have completed their respective assessments.

At the same time, we acknowledge that “guide” and “guiding” may also be used in ordinary language to describe an activity.

We ask the relevant UK membership associations to recognise this position and ensure their members do not use the title “Mountain Guide” or otherwise describe themselves or their services in a way that implies an IFMGA Mountain Guide qualification they do not hold.
