Roger Payne Memorial Fund

The life of Roger Payne was cut short on 12th July 2012 in an avalanche on Mont Maudit in the French Alps. The breadth of his contribution to life in general and mountain training in particular was extraordinary. As an instructor, guide and mountaineer, he had unrivalled enthusiasm for passing on his knowledge and great communication skills with people all over the world. It’s sadly ironic that he was an innovator in the development of avalanche training for both skiers and mountaineers.

The Roger Payne Memorial Fund will carry on his work by supporting a variety of projects.

At this early stage, there are many options but two of those being considered for support are:

  • The British Mountain Guides training scheme to which Roger contributed greatly during his 3 years as president and afterwards
  • Training of mountain people in Sikkim where Roger and Julie-Ann have spent the last 7 years climbing and exploring this remote area of the Himalaya
